Waste Treatment and Technology

To comply with the waste management hierarchy laid down in German and European law, corresponding measures have to be taken at each level of the hierarchy. For waste treatment this means that disposal technologies and a plant infrastructure covering the whole of Germany available for the following categories:

  • Preparation for re-use
  • Recycling
  • Other (material and energy) recovery
  • Disposal

This includes pre-treatment technologies / facilities needed for these processes. In 2014, a total of about 15,500 waste management facilities were in operation in Germany. Below are more details on the most important treatment technologies:
