Germany deposits instrument of ratification

Germany is officially a Party to the Paris Agreement. Today at the United Nations in New York, the German Government deposited its instrument of ratification along with the European Commission and other EU Member States. The thresholds have been crossed which will enable the agreement to come into effect in 30 days time. Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks will be honouring the ratification this Friday in a ceremony with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Hamburg.

Minister Hendricks remarked: "We made history in Paris and today we have made this piece of history irreversible. The Paris Agreement will enter into force in November. We have fought for so long for this agreement and are so happy that Germany is involved as a Party from the onset. We have never seen such strong support all around the globe for climate action, which is an encouraging sign for the implementation phase that now lies ahead."

Germany deposited its instrument of ratification together with the European Commission and other EU Member States. Germany alone represents 2.56 percent of global emissions. The Paris Agreement enters into force 30 days after the point at which at least 55 countries representing a minimum of 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions have deposited their instruments of ratification.

A symbolic handover ceremony with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is taking place in Hamburg this Friday (7 October). Federal Environment Minister Hendricks will give a speech in honour of the UN Secretary-General, who will be presented with the German National Sustainability Award. During the ceremony, Minister Hendricks will also present Ban Ki-moon with a replica of the German instrument of ratification.
