Parlimentary Secretary Katherina Reiche for the Germany Government and Secretary of State of the Dominican Republic, Omar Ramirez-Tejada, signed today an agreement to cooperate on the implementation of the Climate Compatible Development Plan of the Dominican Republic. The Germany Government will contribute up to € 4.5 million to a cooperation project. It is intended to start in 2013 and is estimated to reduce 25% of the Dominican Republic's absolute 2010 emissions.

"The National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism as a policy making institution has the duty to support the efforts that the local governments and the industry take to reduce GHG emissions. The cooperation with Germany is a cornerstone to facilitate the actions in the Dominican Republic" said Ramirez-Tejada.

Katharina Reiche said: "The project is an important step to implement the Climate Compatible Development Plan of the Dominican Republic that was presented was presented by the Caribe-State at the climate conference in Durban."

Already since 2011, Germany supports the Dominican Republic in designing its Climate Compatible Development Plan through the International Climate Initiative of Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. The today agreed cooperation project focuses on the implementation of a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) with a measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system in the waste and cement sector of the Dominican Republic.
