On 11 March 2011, Japan was struck by a severe earthquake. The earthquake and the tsunami it triggered also affected the nuclear power plant sites Fukushima I (Daiichi), Fukushima II (Daini), Onagawa and Tokai. At Japan's Fukushima I (Daiichi) nuclear power plant, the tsunami in particular caused the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. The Federal Environment Ministry has since been closely involved in developments within Germany brought about in response to the Fukushima disaster.
